CONDUCTING THE INTERNET- LEARNINGN PROGRAM - EXPENCES

CONDUCTING THE INTERNET- LEARNINGN PROGRAM - EXPENCES

CONDUCTING THE INTERNET LEARNING PROCES

The training process has four elements:

  1. Reading the study material through the internet
  2. Processing one’s own Learning & Innovation profile and its analyses
  3. Making an assignment for the team meeting
  4. Meeting with the team; discussion about the team profile, team dynamics, and team development

The process can be presented as follows:

Reading the material through the internet

The content of training program is transformed in order to be rad through the internet and it can be read with most internet programs (Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer). The material thoroughly covers all the key issues of understanding the different thinking and learning styles of people. It helps to identify different styles from behaviour and connects individual thinking styles to team development and to organizational development and change. This cognitive trail was one of the key findings in the PhD dissertation of Jukka Alava, the developer of the program.

In preparing the internet reading, the focus has been in making the program very easy to use and self-explanatory without forgetting the in-depth- approach needed. The material consists 150 pages and it takes about 3-4 hrs to read it and process the individual profile.

Processing and analyzing  one’s own individual profile

A key element in the internet program is understanding one’s own thinking and learning profile. Therefore, every student reading the material will process his/her own profile. The Learning & Innovation profile is based on one’s own self-assessment. The profile consists of 9 pages and has three separate parts: 1) the cognitive styles (thinking and learning styles), 2) mental preferences and aptitudes, 3) learning styles.  There will be altogether 15 areas to be assessed in the profile.

Making an assignment

Special assignment and questions are included in material in order to deepened the learning process. The questions are answered on the screen when they appear in the program, they are then printed and brought into the team meeting.

Team meeting and analyses of team dynamics

The last phase of the team development program is the team meeting. To conduct this meeting, the team leader is provided special instructions and the team profile which is processed as the combination of all individual profiles. In the team meeting the differences and similarities of individual profiles are discussed, and the effects of the team profile to the team’s work is analyzed. The team meeting usually takes about 3-4 hours and the discussions can be continued as seen fit.

The team meeting is a vital part of the program and it’s goals are to increase openness in the team and to improve the internal dynamics of the team.

In order to secure the success of the team meeting, specific guidelines are provided to the team leader. These guidelines for trainers are based on the several years of experience in conducting these kinds of development processes.

A NOVEL AND COST-EFFECTIVE WAY TO CONDUCT TEAM DEVELOPMENT

The pedagogical solution

This internet program is based on the most modern understanding of adult learning and in is a combination of IT-technology and live team meeting.

The pedagogical solution is based on the four phases described earlier:

  1. Reading the study material through the internet
  2. Processing one’s own Learning & Innovation profile and its analyses
  3. Making an assignment for the team meeting
  4. Meeting with the team; discussion about the team profile, team dynamics, and team development

The programs with similar goals have traditionally been conducted in 2-3 day in-house seminar or training sessions. They have included lectures about individual thinking and learning styles, exercises and discussions. The individual profile is processed before the seminar and is brought to the seminar by the facilitator.

According to our experience, the most powerful element in the seminars has been the common discussion of individual profiles, their similarities and differences, and the team profile with it’s analyses. For these reasons, the live team meeting is the fourth phase in the program. All other elements and phase of the program can be done through the internet giving much more freedom to individual students and making the whole program very cost effective.
